Obituary

George Roosevelt Barlow, Sr., 72, of Welaka, entered the sunset of life on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine following a brief illness. A native of Jackson, GA., George was the son of Roosevelt and Mattie (Goodrum) Barlow born on Sunday, September 17, 1939. He was educated in the Putnam County School District (Central Academy, Class of 1957). He was a resident of Welaka for over 60 years. He was a member of New Mt. Tamo Baptist Church, Pomona Park. George and Temperance were united in Holy Matrimony on September 16, 1957. In April, 2006, George retired from Georgia-Pacific following 39 years of service as an operator in Tissue Shipping. George was an avid FSU fan and his hobbies and interests included fishing, boating, home improvement projects (plumbing & electrical work), and back in the day water skiing and motorcycle riding). George was involved in community service and was elected as a Town Councilman for the Town of Welaka. He served for several years on the G-P (now First Coast) Federal Credit Unions Credit Committee. George was an expert in his field and was delegated to negotiate several contracts for Georgia-Pacific.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in eternal rest by his brothers, Whittie Barlow, Sr., Theodore Roosevelt Barlow and R.J. Barlow; sisters; Barbara Carey and Laura Mae Barlow.

Those who will forever cherish his memories; beloved wife of 54 years, Temperance M. Barlow, Welaka; devoted sons and daughters, George R. Barlow, Jr., Daytona Beach; Timothy E. Barlow, Douglasville, GA; Kimberly B. (Alphonso) Carreker, Marietta, GA; Chevelle B. (Horace) Gillespie, League City, TX; Lawrence A. (Deidra) Barlow, Welaka; Veronica Green, Bartow; 10 grandchildren, Joshua Barlow, Harash Barlow, Steven Lee, Jerrold Barlow, Alphonso Carreker, Skylar Carreker, Lauren Gillespie, Lawrence Barlow, Jr., Yvette Barlow, Erica Milledge; great-grand daughter, Iyana Myles; sister; Mamie (Willie) Simmons, Pomona Park; aunts; Maudine Taylor, Jackson, GA; Sally (Forest) Saffo, Atlanta, GA; dedicated goddaughter; Vivian (Herman) McIntyre, Charlotte, NC; godchildren; Ronald Eric Young Sr., Cedrica Milton, and Alicia Milton; in-laws, Isaiah (Carolyn) Mills, Steven Jones, Gary Mills, Albert Brady, Sue Mills, Cheryl Walker, Norma J (Jerald A.) Dewdney; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, former co-workers and friends.

Visitation of family and friends will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, October 14, at the "Chapel of Serenity." A Celebration of Life will be 4:30 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2011 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 719 Reid Street, Palatka, Rev. James McGriff, pastor. Reverend Ron Rawls, Sr., Pastor of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, St. Augustine, is the eulogist. The cortege will assemble at the Barlows residence at 3:30 p.m., Saturday at 510 10th Avenue, Welaka.

Interment will be in Oak Hill East Cemetery in Palatka
