Obituary

Gary Lewis Miller, 55, of Palatka entered the sunset of life on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Elmer Lewis and Gloria Ann (Martin) Miller, born on Friday, May 15, 1959. He resided in Cedar Lake, Indiana from his early childhood until his teen years. At the age of 13, he moved to Interlachen (Manville area) to reside with his maternal grandparents, Homer Arthur (Beulah) Martin. He was a 1977 graduate of Palatka South High School. He enrolled in the welding program at St. Augustine Vo-Tech Center and was subsequently employed by Offshore Shipbuilding for several years. He was a 20-year fabricator/welder at Atlantic Marine in Mayport and later was employed for 10 years at Jacksonville Machine & Repair until he retired three years ago due to declining health. He was united in marriage to his first and only love of his life former Greta Belinda Lawhorn on November 7, 1980 at the Ravine Gardens. He was of the Christian faith. "Miller" loved watching NASCAR, football and was an avid Jacksonville Jaguars fan. His hobbies included fishing, spending time with family and especially enjoying the cookouts where he cooked his "scrumptious, mouth-watering Bar-B-Que." He sailed the world and was known as the "Great White World Traveler" (GWWT). In addition to his father, he was preceded in eternal rest by mother in law, Nora Bell Lawhorn-Jones; brother-in-law, Kevin Lawhorn. To cherish his memories, devoted wife of 34 years, Greta Lawhorn Miller, Palatka; daughter, Melody Alicia (Trent) Hamby, Easley, SC., son, Gary (Jennifer) Miller II, Palatka; granddaughter, Cheyenne Elise Miller, Palatka; mother, Gloria Ann (John) Meadows, Sparta, TN., brother, Andrew Paul (Jennifer S.) Miller, Easley, SC., brothers-in-law, Dwight (Rita) Lawhorn, Temple, GA., Greg (Kathy) Lawhorn, Hogansville, GA., Kermit (Carol) Lawhorn, San Mateo; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation of family and friends will be from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, November 30 with a Celebration of "Miller's" Life at 3 p.m., Sunday at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Pastor Jim Blevins, of Eden Baptist Church, Hawthorne will be officiating. Interment will be 11 a.m., Monday, December 1st at Oak Hill East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be sent to the "Gary L. Miller Memorial Fund," c/o Flagg-Serenity Chapel, 2400 Madison Street, Palatka, FL 32177.
