Freddie Lee
Dorsey, Sr.
February 2, 1946 – August 28, 2020
Freddie Lee Dorsey, Sr., 74, a native and lifelong resident of Palatka and son of Hattie Mae Dorsey, was born on Saturday, February 2, 1946. He was educated in the Putnam County School District and a 1964 graduate of Central Academy High School where he was an outstanding athlete. He attended Savannah State College, Savannah, Georgia, on a football scholarship and earned an Associate's degree. His first job was with Purina Checkerboard Feed Store on Palatka's riverfront. SP5 (T) Dorsey was inducted into the U.S. Army on Tuesday, September 6, 1966 earning numerous citations, including the National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooter (Rifle). Dorsey subsequently transferred to the 292nd Transportation Company, U. S. Army Reserve in Palatka following his honorable service. Freddie was baptized and accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church. Over the years, he faithfully served in numerous ministries, including Deacon's ministry, Trustee Ministry (past Chairman), Men's ministry and Pastor's Resource Ministry. He was a former employee at Georgia-Pacific. Freddie's nearly 25-year career of employment was spent as a power plant mechanic with Florida Power & Light Co. Freddie was an avid NASCAR and sports fan. He was an awesome mechanic and had great culinary skills and enjoyed hosting family cookouts at his home. Although Freddie became physically limited due to injuries sustained in a 1991 automobile accident, his heart and soul were untouched because his confidence was sustained by the grace of God.
Freddie was preceded in eternal rest by his mother, Hattie Mae Dorsey; maternal grandmother, Mary Lee Cooper; aunts and uncles, Blanche (Nathaniel "Foots") James, Acie James, Josh (Anna) Thomas, and Ernest Brown; niece, Judy Milton Freeman; sister in law, Patricia Hughes; brother in law, Jimmie Belser; and step-son, Teddy Hill.
Deacon Dorsey entered the sunset of life at 6 o'clock a.m., on Friday, August 28, 2020 at Governor's Creek Health & Rehabilitation Center, Green Cove Springs, FL.
He leaves to cherish his memories: 3 sons, Chief MSgt Freddie L. Dorsey, Jr., (USAF Retired), Warner Robins, GA; Eric Dorsey, Palm Coast; mar"C"uss Dorsey (fiancée Tipla Campbell), Palatka; 4 grandchildren, LeeToria Tyler Dorsey, Leemanuel Tyriq Dorsey, Atlanta, GA; Melvin LaShane Jennings, Palatka; Kahseem Saybon Davenport, Darlington, SC; 4 great-grandchildren, Melvin, Messiah, Nevaeh, and Noah; 2 sisters, Evangelist Patricia D. Milton, Palatka; Helen D. Belser, Irvington, NJ; 2 brothers, Charles Hughes, Stevie (Roshonda) Watson, both of Palatka; "surrogate daughter," Aundria S. Bryant, Palatka; step-sons, Andre' (Kimberly) Hill, Texas; and Jimmie (Sheila) O'Neal, Jacksonville, FL; 22 nieces and nephews, including Herman (Patricia) Milton, Jr., Clermont; Sabrina Milton Oliver, Palatka; and La'Tasha Washington, Ocala; countless extended family members, numerous loving compassionate caregivers, and too many special friends to enumerate individually (you already know how special you were to Freddie!).
In full compliance with CDC COVID-19 guidelines, a limited, socially-distanced (masks required) visitation of family and friends: 5-7 p.m., on Thursday, September 3rd at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Homegoing Celebration: 10 a.m., Friday, September 4th at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, Reverend Karl N. Flagg, Senior Pastor, is the eulogist. Rev. Dr. Geraldine W. McClellan, retired pastor of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Gainesville, officiating. The family has requested friends to join the family virtually via Facebook live: Flagg Serenity Memorial Chapel. The U.S. Army will provide military honors. Private interment: 9 a.m., on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2020 in the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
