Obituary

Deaconess Emily Maddlean Cohen Mims, 95, of Crescent City, peacefully entered the sunset of life on Thursday, January 22, 2015, at her Mims residence. A native of Sylvania (Screven County) GA., she was the daughter of Jack and Hattie (Jason) Cohen, Sr., born on July 7, 1919. On November 13, 1937, she was united in Holy Matrimony to David Andrew Mims, Sr. and they shared sixty-five wonderful marital years together until his earthly transition on September 25, 2002. In 1945, they relocated to Crescent City, FL., and the family became affiliated with Friendship Baptist Church (Denver area) and they were consecrated as Deacon and Deaconess, respectively. During her early years of membership, she was very instrumental in organizing the usher ministry and choir; worked very diligently with the youth, assisted in coordinating youth-related programs and also served as a Sunday School Teacher and Church Clerk from the late 70's until 2012. She was active in the St. Johns River Baptist Association and served as Financial Secretary of the Women's Department of the Ministers, Deacons, and Deaconesses Union #2. Throughout the years, her civic affiliations included, Crescent City Community Chorus, Evergreen Cemetery Committee, Crescent City NAACP and the Crescent City Women's Civic Association (charter member). In addition to her parents and husband, Emily was preceded in eternal rest by her brother, Jack Cohen Jr., sisters, Ruth Cohen Bryant, Everlena Coleman, Elizabeth Jones, Fannie Mae Campfield and Hester Wright; sons-in-law, Charles Hodge and James Pinckney. She leaves to cherish her memories: three sons, David and Barbara Mims, Jr., High Point, NC., John Mims, Mobile, AL., Harold and Belinda Mims, Gainesville; two daughters, Mamie Hodge, Atlanta, GA, Elizabeth Pinckney, Crescent City; special niece, (raised and considered a daughter), Mamie Mack, Tampa; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Visitation of family and friends will be 5-7 p.m., Saturday, January 31, at Friendship Baptist Church, Reverend Michael Robinson, Pastor. Homegoing Celebration will be 3 p.m., Sunday, February 1 at True Foundation Ministries, 608 Randolph Street, Crescent City, Host Pastor Gwendolyn George. Reverend Johnnie Butts, pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Federal Point; 2nd Vice Moderator, St. Johns River Baptist Association; President of Union #2, is the Eulogist. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Crescent City.
