SFC Elijah Bragg (U.S. Army, Retired), 90, of Junction City, KS entered the sunset of life on Sunday, October 7, 2012. A native of Palatka, he was the son of General Sheldon & Ella Gertrude (Strickland) Bragg born on Friday, August 31, 1922. He was educated in the Putnam County school system and joined the U.S. Army prior to graduation, subsequently earning his GED in the military and furthered his education at Kansas State University. Elijah accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and was baptized in the St. Johns River. He has been a longtime member of Second Missionary Baptist Church of Junction City and faithfully served as Assistant Financial Secretary, Trustee, Deacon, Layman, Sunday School, Study Group Mission Circle, Treasurer of Smoky Hill District Association, Assistant Secretary for Boy Scouts of America Troop #246, and was an active supporter of the Sunbeams on the local, district and state level. Elijah served as a communications specialist in the United States Army (1942-1963), retiring with an honorable discharge at Ft. Riley, KS., earning numerous decorations, including the National Defense Service, Good Conduct, APTO, World War II Victory Medals, Marksmanship Badge Rifle M1, etc. He was employed with the U.S. Civil Service at Ft. Riley until his retirement in 1988. He was a 32nd Degree Mason in Acacia Lodge #91 (past Treasurer) and past worthy Patron for St. Tabitha #75; Past Potentate for the Shriners. He was a member of the NAACP and served on Kansas Children's Service League Board. In addition to his parents and first wife, Kathryn Bragg, he was preceded in eternal rest by daughter, Kimberly P. Bragg-Madkins; brother, Obadiah Bragg; sisters, Rosa Lee Jordan and Martha Elizabeth Edwards. Those who cherish his loving memories: He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bragg; sons and daughters, David Bragg, Tina M. Nichols-Waller (Sherman), Kirt D. Nichols (Janie), Terry N. Rivers (Sheldon); Raymond A. Nichols (Yolanda); Sister: Ella Lesene, Palatka, FL; loved like sons (nephews) Horace Jefferson and Elijah Lowery; 12 grandchildren; and a host of other extended relatives and friends. The Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m. CST (today) Friday, October 12, at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 701 W. 10th Street, Junction City, KS, Dr. Leonard F. Gray, Pastor, is the eulogist. Interment with military honors will be in Kansas Veteran Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, KS.
