Obituary

Edward "Tony" Brown was born to Nelson Woodrow and Minnie Lee Hammock in Pocahontas, Mississippi on December 9, 1931.  He was educated in the public schools in Hinds County, Mississippi.

On June 3, 1951, Edward "Tony" and his beloved Alma united in holy matrimony and together they were the proud parents of 5 children. Earlier in life, he also welcomed a son, Edward Lee Brown, Jr. He often said that God had blessed him with loving and faithful children, whom he loved dearly.

He was a child of God, a husband and father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, Godfather, uncle, and a Deacon in the service of the Lord at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Palm Coast, Florida.

His earlier service to God was at the Gospel Spreading Church of God in Washington, DC. Over the years, he held many roles, including serving on the church's Executive Board of Directors and as Assistant Camp Director at Camp Lightfoot in Williamsburg, Virginia, working alongside beloved friends and Directors, James and Almeta Stokes. His camp name, Dove, reflected his gentle spirit.  He sang in the choir, served on the Usher Board, and was an active member of the Graduate Scholarship Committee. Tony demonstrated a servant's heart throughout his ministry. His favorite scripture is found in John 15:5 …. "I am the vine, ye are the branches; He that abides in me, and I in Him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me, ye can do nothing."

Edward "Tony" had a deep love for music. He sang in several quartet groups over the years, sharing his gift joyfully with Brothers Estep, Lyles, Crockett, Russell, Woods, and a host of others. His voice and passion for gospel music touched many and reflected his heartfelt faithfulness to God.

For many years, Edward "Tony" was employed by the National Geographic Society, where he served with distinction as chauffeur to the President of the Society. He was trusted to drive several prominent dignitaries and notable leaders. During his tenure, he received numerous awards for outstanding service. He also played on the organization's baseball team.

In 1994, he and Alma relocated to Palm Coast, Florida where they were led by God to join the family of believers at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, under the leadership of God's appointed and anointed shepherd, Pastor Edwin Coffie. Edward "Tony" became the 44th member of the church. He served in the choir and was later appointed and ordained as a Deacon in the year 2000.

His loving and faithful wife, Alma, preceded him in death in 2001.

On November 29, 2003, Edward "Tony" married Ruth Lyles and gained another daughter, son-in-law, and two more grandchildren. With great love for God and for one another, they served faithfully as Deacon and Deaconess, Zebulun Tribe leaders, and members of the Hospitality Ministry.

Edward and Ruth shared 21 beautiful years of marriage.  Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter and faith.  They especially enjoyed traveling, visiting family, and spending time with one another at home, which they took great joy in decorating together.  Whether playing games, serving in ministry or simply enjoying each other's company, they were a source of strength and companionship for one another.  Ruth was his devoted partner and their bond was a true blessing that brought joy and warmth to their family and church community.  Oh, what love!

Tony lived his life as though singing in his spirit:

"I'm climbing up the golden stairs to glory,
Oh yes, I'm climbing with my golden crown before me.
I'm climbing toward the light,
I'm climbing day and night,
For I will shout with all of my might when I get there."

He was preceded in eternal rest by his son, Edward, Jr. and son in law, Steven.

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, Edward "Tony" answered the Lord's call for him to advance from labor to reward.

Precious memories of Edward "Tony" remain with his wife of 21 years, Ruth Lyles Brown;  devoted sons, Pernell (Margaret), Marcellus (Doreen), Alex (Bertrane); loving daughters, Sharon (David), Tonette, Donna (Keven); 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, one god-daughter, extended relatives, and dear friends who will cherish his memory forever.
