Donald Keith "Don" McCalligan, 73, of Palm Coast, entered the sunset of life on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Florida Hospital Flagler, Palm Coast. The son of Charles Joseph and Cora Maxine (Just) McCalligan, Don was born on Tuesday, November 2, 1943 in Milwaukee, WI. Donald was educated in the Duval County Public School (Class of 1961). Donald was drafted into the United States Army and served as a paratrooper during the Vietnam War and subsequently served in the Army Reserves (1966-1972). Don has been a resident of Bunnell since 1971. He was an awesome auto mechanic for Sam Trivette Ford, Bunnell and subsequently became the owner & operator of D&K Tire and Automotive (1986-2016). Don served on the City of Bunnell's Planning, Zoning, and Appeals Board for over 26 years, serving as chairman for the majority of those years. He was united in marriage to the former Minnie Delores Fender in Sevierville, TN. Don was a former resident of Deland where he operated an Amoco gas station. He was of the Baptist faith and a former member who sang in the choir at First Baptist Church of Pierson. He and his wife attended First Baptist Church of Bunnell. An avid Dale Earnhardt fan, "Don" thoroughly enjoyed dirt track racing and his favorite mini-sprints. Don's professionalism, integrity, kindness and respect was always displayed in his business and during planning board meetings. He was an awesome mechanic who was loved by many. He was preceded in eternal rest by his parents.
He leaves to cherish his memories: devoted wife, Delores McCalligan, Palm Coast; sons, Chris Thomas, Edgewater; Travis McCalligan, Holly Hill; Justin McCalligan, Jacksonville; daughter, Kim McCalligan, Bunnell; step-daughter, Elizabeth Schleif, Cameno Park, CA; step-sons, Randy Tucker, Bunnell; Joe Kubinski, Williston; brother, Willis (Renda) McCalligan, Menomonee Falls, WI; sister, Joan (Frank) Andrews, Callahan; grandson, Christopher Thomas, Palatka; granddaughters, Grace, Paige, Brooklyn, and Autumn; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.
Memorial Service with U.S. Army military honors will be 11 a.m., Saturday, December 10, at First Baptist Church of Bunnell, 2301 Commerce Parkway, Bunnell, FL., Rev. Eric Trawick, Pastor. Rev. Karl N. Flagg, Pastor, Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church of Palatka, officiating. Private interment: Jacksonville National Cemetery.
