Dexture Wayne Givens, 64, native and lifelong resident of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at UF Health Shands, Gainesville. The son of Johnnie Givens, Jr. and Loretha Virginia (West) Givens, he was born on Sunday, August 29, 1954. Dexture was a 1973 graduate of Central Academy High School. He was a master automotive mechanic who owned and operated Dexture's garage. During his early years, he attended Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, hot rods, music, playing his guitar, motorcycling, and spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in eternal rest by his father, Johnnie Givens, Jr.; son, Darren Wayne Givens; maternal grandparents, William West, Sr. and Corene Gavin West; paternal grandparents, Johnnie Givens, Sr. and Cora Holmes Givens; brothers, Alvin Lynn Givens and Rev. Terrance Q. Givens, Sr.; step-father, Reverend Ezekiel Johnson; special uncle, Joe Louis West.
He leaves to cherish his memories: devoted wife, Dolly Ann Oxendine- Givens, Palatka; mother, Loretha Virginia West-Johnson; son, Dexture Tyrone "Ron" (Tarsha) Givens, Palatka; daughter, Josetta "Miiko" (Thermos) Williams-Coye, Hartford, CT; nine grandchildren, Jonathan, Charity, Joshua, Chantael, Joseph, Janell, Jarina, Jeffrey, Ja'Noz; 2 great-grandchildren; brothers, Johnnie Orrin (Claudette) Givens, Sr., Palatka; Edwin Keith (Tangie) Givens, East Palatka; aunts and uncles, Marvie (Nathan) Allen, Murline West, both of East Palatka; Susie Givens, Green Cove Springs; Iona West, Dorothy West, both of Miami; Willie James (Mamie) Johnson, Warner Robins, GA; goddaughter, Precious McKinnon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Willie Oxendine, Jr., Ona (Robert) Baker, both of Palatka; Wilma (Booker) Knowles, East Palatka; Bernard Oxendine, Vernon Oxendine, both of Georgetown; Carolyn L. Oxendine, Crescent City; Irene (T.C.) Ford, Seville; Cassie Mae Oxendine, Orlando; Walden (Betty) Cook, Greenville, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation of family and friends will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, May 31, at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Celebration of Dexture's Life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka. Reverend James H. McGriff, Pastor of Bethel A.M.E Church, is the eulogist. Family and friends are requested to wear blue jeans at the celebration to honor Dexture's legacy. Interment will be in Palatka Memorial Gardens.
