Curitus Lowe, 87, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Palatka Health Care Center following an extended illness. A native of Carbur (Taylor County), Florida, he was the beloved son of Sam and Pearl (Harris) Lowe, born on Wednesday, November 3, 1926. Curitus was educated and a graduate of Taylor County School System (Perry, FL). At the age of 20, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and received an honorable discharge. He served his country for 12 years during World War II and the Korean War (1946-1958). Simultaneously with his military career, Curitus was a U. S. Army professional boxer receiving numerous championship titles. Curitus represented the U.S.A. at W.S. United Kingdom (1948) and was runner up in the Middleweight division at the XIV Olympics. Curitus was named "All Army and Air Force Hawaiian Area Champion" (Middleweight), "All Hawaiian Challenger Champion" (Army, Navy, Air Force & Marines), and "All Pacifica Army and Air Force Champion" (Middleweight). He had numerous other achievements and awards in boxing, including the Red Landers Boxing Team at Schofield Barracks Hawaii, Runner-up (1947) Hawaiian A.A.U. at Honolulu; Hawaiian Golden Glove at Honolulu Runner up (Light Heavyweight); Post Champion Schofield Barracks(1948); Post Champion Camp Lee, VA Runner-Up Second Place Army Middleweight (1949); Post Champion Lee, VA Light-Heavy Weight Second Place at V.F.H. General Hes. PA, Army Champion (1950); 3rd Place All Army Fort Bragg, NC Welter Weight; Post Champion Bussac, France (1951); Total Bouts 150, Won 142, Lost 8. Curitus later married Rosetta Campbell and was proud father of two children. He relocated to Orlando with his job, then to San Francisco. After his discharge, he was employed with the food industry, and became a boxing instructor and coach at the Ocean View Recreation Center in San Francisco, CA. In 1997, Curitus retired and relocated to Palatka to spend time with his family. He was a member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, Orange Mills and served on the Deacon's Ministry. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading the bible, attending church, teaching others about the word of God, and boxing. In addition to his parents, his sisters, Irene Lowe-Williams, Doretha Lowe-Bell and Lizzie M. Lowe-Hopkins; brothers, Hollis Lowe, Paul E. Lowe, and Eddie Lowe preceded him in eternal rest. Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, January 17th at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity."
