Christopher Joe Powell, 61, of Palatka, former resident of Lawrenceville, GA., entered the sunset of life on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Halifax Health Medical Center, Daytona Beach. A native of Gainesville, GA., Chris was the son of Joe Bailey Powell and Mary Elizabeth Richardson Powell, born on Saturday, October 19, 1957. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Gainesville, GA., and recently attended Palm Coast United Methodist Church. Christopher was educated in the Hall County GA School District a 1975 graduate of East Hall High School. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Army from July 7, 1976 until November 14, 1978. Christopher earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at Langston University in Oklahoma and was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He was united in marriage to the former Lucy Victoria Hutcherson on August 26, 1994. Christopher enjoyed reading, watching movies, and playing various sports, including golf, basketball, and football. He played Cornerback and Defensive Back for the Atlanta Falcons and was a member of the Atlanta Chapter, National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). Chris was very industrious and was formerly employed as an Inventory Supervisor at Rooms-To-Go and also as Logistics Manager at Airgas.
In addition to his parents, Chris was preceded in eternal rest by his parents and grandparents.
Those left to cherish the memories of Christopher: devoted wife of over 24 years , Lucy "Vickie" Hutcherson Powell, Palatka; daughter , Victoria Powell, Ellenwood, GA; sister , Janice Burton, Decatur, GA; brothers , Burgess Powell, Jacksonville; Garnett "Tino" Powell, Atlanta, GA; and Dante Powell, Lawrenceville, GA; mother in law , Lucy Hutcherson, Palatka; godchildren , Tamika (Reginald) Shackleford-Fields, Union City, GA; Twann Shackleford, Atlanta, GA., ; aunts and uncles , Louise Farmer, Frank Powell, Wade Powell, Almira Richardson; brothers-in-law, Henry (Connie) Hutcherson, Jr., Lakewood, NJ; Lawrence Hutcherson, Sr., and Richard Hutcherson, both of Palatka; sister-in-law, Eleanor Johnson, Port Orange, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
