Charlie "CharlieChat" "C.C." Thomas, 77, of San Mateo, entered the sunset of life on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at KindredHospital - North Florida, Green Cove Springs. The son of Bossie and Onnie Lee Thomas, he was a native of Barney, GA, born on Wednesday, September 28, 1938. Charlie was educated in the Brooks County GA School District. He was united in marriage to the former Christine McKinnon on February 7, 1959. In 1964, they relocated from Quitman, GA to San Mateo, FL. He was a longtime farm laborer and was briefly employed with City of Palatka Public Works. Charlie was a member of Second Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, San Mateo, where he served as a Church Trustee, Treasurer, and as an Usher. He was an avid gardener, and thoroughly enjoyed watching soap operas, especially "The Young and The Restless". "CharlieChat" proudly displayed the front plate on his 1993 green Ford Ranger truck: "C.C. the Genius". In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing neighborhood softball.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in eternal rest by his: son and daughters, Allen Thomas, Sr., Mary Jo Brewer and Kimberly Thomas; grandson, Curtis Lewis; 6 brothers, Willie James, Clenis, Leroy, Howard, Eugene and Johnnie Thomas; 3 sisters, Fannie Mae Palmer, Rosa Lee Maxwell, Mattie Lee Thomas.
He leaves to cherish his memories: daughters, Helen Thomas (Keith) Gilyard, Vickie (Earl) Nelson, Willie Mae Thomas, all of Palatka, Catherine Thomas Whitfield, Columbus, GA; son, Charlie (Monica) Thomas, Jr., Gainesville; sister , Daisy Mae Thomas, Valdosta, GA; 27 grandchildren, Allen Thomas, Jr., Shelton Gilyard, Jr., Terry L. Gilyard, Sharod S. Gilyard, Lavonia L. Offord, Antonio J. Gilyard, Shashonta S. Dice, Latoria L. Lewis, Tyheia T. Lewis, Jerry L. Mack, Jr., Latangy M. Mack, Doretha M. Mack, Valerie S. Mack, Devette Edwards, Jerome Edwards, Shantell Robinson, Antoine D. Broadnax, Rica S. Appling, Renada S. Appling, Rashad S. Appling, Charles A. Whitfield, Jr., Tyree D. Whitfield, Charlie Thomas, III, Christina Thomas, Christopher Thomas, Cayden Thomas, Calleb Thomas ; 50 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandsons; mother-in-law, Mary McKinnon, Palatka; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Betty Jean (Eddie) Lewis, Ethel Mae McKinnon, Angela McKinnon, all of Palatka; Cindy (Charlie) Williams, Gladys (Virgil) Baynard, Martha McKinnon, William McKinnon, Freddie McKinnon, Willie James (Sonya) McKinnon, Mitchell (Carrie) McKinnon, all of San Mateo, Arlester McKinnon, Barney, GA; godchildren, Marco McKinnon, Lamesa Crooms, Carmela Crooms, Shakela Crooms, Roderick Curry, Marsha Michael, Vosie Miller, Breonna Appling; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, church family and friends.
Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m., Friday, April 1st at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity". Homegoing Celebration will be 2 p.m., Saturday, April 2, at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, Reverend Karl N. Flagg, Pastor. Reverend Wayne Williams, Pastor of 2nd Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, San Mateo, is the Eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill East Cemetery.
