Charlie Boyd Herring, 90, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at St. Augustine Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Hawthorne, he was the son of Amos "Buster" Herring and Hattie (Coleman) Nelson, he was born on Friday, July 18, 1930. He was educated in the Alachua Public School System and a graduate of Shell High School, Hawthorne.  At an early age, Charlie accepted Christ as his personal Savior.  Charlie moved to New York City and several years later united in marriage to the former Grace Swain and they became the proud parents of one son, Charles.  He was a longtime truck driver employed by the Sherwin-Williams Paint Company until retirement. As a family, they lived and worked in New York City for 47 years. In 2011, they relocated to Palatka and subsequently both of them became residents of the St. Augustine Health & Rehabilitation Center to serve their essential healthcare needs.

In addition to his parents , Charlie was preceded in eternal rest by his devoted brother , Cecil Nelson.

He leaves to cherish his memories: loving wife, Grace Swain Herring; son, Charles (Nikki) Nelson, Sr.; devoted sister-in-law, Stella Nelson; sisters, Juanita Cunningham, Bonnie (Ernest) Sheffield, Terry A. (Sinatria) Williams; brothers, Lenton (Rev. Marie) Herring, Hawthorne; Rev. Eugene E. (Yvonne) Herring; a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and caregivers including the staff of St. Augustine Health and Rehabilitation Center.

In compliance with CDC COVID-19 guidelines (including required masks) a socially-distanced visitation will be held at 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Friday, February 12, with the Celebration of Charlie's Life commencing at 12 noon, at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." His brother, the Reverend Eugene E. Herring, pastor of New Hope United Methodist Church, Hawthorne, is the eulogist. Interment will be in Hawthorne Cemetery.
