Cary Albert Daddy West, 78, of Jacksonville, entered the sunset of life on Sunday, May 3rd at St. Catherine Laboure Manor in Jacksonville following an extended illness. Cary was a native of Palatka, born August 6, 1930 to the union of Mr. & Mrs. William (Corene) West, Sr. He was educated in the Putnam County School District (Central Academy High School) Cary really loved to sing, it was his passion. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, The Famous Singing Sons (his brothers singing group) traveled extensively with Rosetta Tharpe and also shared the stage with numerous groups such as The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Soul Stirrers and The Kings of Harmony. They professionally recorded a record with Decca Records. Cary was a United States Army veteran. On October 25, 1956, he was united in holy matrimony to the former Olivia Boggs. They resided in Newark, New Jersey for 22 years before returning to Palatka. He was an expert furniture refinisher and was the owner and operator of West Furniture Refinishing in Newark, New Jersey. In 1977, Cary relocated his family and his business to Palatka, FL. He was truly a gifted woods craftsman. Since 1996, he was a member of the Refuge Church of Our Lord in Palatka. Cary was preceded in eternal rest by his parents; brothers, Jessie West, Nathaniel West, James Carl J.C. West, William Nebo West, Jr., and recently on April 12, 2009 Joe Louis West; Sisters, Ella Mae West and Winnie Lee Williams To Cherish his memories, devoted wife of 52yrs, Olivia B. West, Jacksonville; daughters, Cynthia Lorraine West, Miami; Cara West Scott, Jacksonville; Son, Cary West, Jr., Indiantown; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; Sisters, Lucille W. Maxwell, Atlanta, GA; Loretha W. Johnson (Rev. Ezekiel), Palatka; Marvie W. Allen (Nathan), East Palatka; Willie James Johnson (Mamie), Warner Robins, GA; Sisters-in-law, Charlie Mae West and Iona West, Darletha Boggs, all of Miami; Murline West, East Palatka; and a host of other relative. Visitation: Friday, May 8 from 5 8 p.m. at the Chapel of Serenity. A Celebration of Life will be 12 Noon Saturday, May 9, at Mt Tabor First Baptist Church. His pastor, Dr. Derrick Roberts Sr., Refuge Church of our Lord, Palatka is the eulogist. Interment will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Jacksonville National Cemetery with military honors.
