Obituary

Dr. Bishop Venerable Armstrong, Sr., 67, of Grandin, transitioned from this earthly life and went home to be with the Lord at 3:05 p.m., Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Shands at U.F. Medical Center, Gainesville, FL. A native of Plymouth, NC, he was born on Saturday, March 10, 1945 to Esau & Malethia (Baker) Armstrong. He was a 1963 graduate of Washington County Union High School, Roper, NC and following graduation, he moved to Brooklyn, NY and resided there for 7 years. On April 26, 1965, he was united in holy matrimony to the former Jannie Dell Davis in Roper NC. In 1970, they relocated to Grandin and in 1971 he joined Putnam Hall Church of God, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. In 1973, Bishop Armstrong was called to the gospel ministry and later appointed as Pastor of Crescent City Church of God. Over the years, his employment career included the Lawtey Correctional Institution, Florida Power & Light, and Hudson Pulp & Paper Mill until he became full-time in pastoral ministry. In 1984, he earned certification in Auto Paint & Body and Mechanics from St. Augustine Technical Institute. In 1986, he was appointed to serve as Pastor of Putnam Hall Church of God, where he served for 24 years. He earned his Doctorate degree from the St. Paul Bible Institute of Brooklyn, NY and was subsequently consecrated as an ordained Bishop. Since 2010, he has served as Pastor of Powerhouse Faith and Praise Church of God, Gainesville and also served as the District Overseer, Ocala District Church of God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in eternal rest by his daughter, Drucilla Armstrong two brothers, Esau Armstrong, Jr. and Clayton Armstrong; two sisters, Ruth Armstrong Jordan and Margie Armstrong; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Elliott & Mary Etta Davis. To cherish his memories: devoted wife of 47 years, Jannie Dell (Davis) Armstrong, Grandin; cherished daughters, Della (Anthony) Davis-McCaskill, Interlachen; Valerie Armstrong, Oxford; Nicole (Andrew) Armstrong-Snyder, Interlachen; Nuitrelle (Frederick) Armstrong- Brown, St. Augustine; beloved sons, Van (Cynthia) Blount, Brooklyn, NY; Venerable (LaShonda) Armstrong, Jr., Interlachen; Elias Armstrong, Grandin; Ira (Heather) Armstrong, Ocala; 22 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sisters, Maxine (James) Armstrong-Hooker, Brooklyn, NY; Fay Armstrong, Laurel, MD; Delores Armstrong, Raleigh, NC; and a host of other relatives, Church of God family and friends. Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, October 26th at the "Chapel of Serenity." The Homegoing Celebration will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 27th, at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 Saint Johns Avenue, Palatka, Rev. Karl N. Flagg, pastor. Reverend Alfred C. Davis, Sr., Associate Minister, Abilene Missionary Baptist Church, Putnam Hall, is the eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery, 712 S. Palm Avenue, Palatka. The cortege will assemble at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the Armstrong family residence, 1103 Highway 315, Grandin.
