Obituary

(Use Photo please) Birdie Brewton Oliver, 73, of East Palatka, entered the sunset of life peacefully on Thursday evening, October 6, 2011 at her residence surrounded by her family. The beloved daughter of Willie Dwight and Maggie (Mullins) Brewton, Birdie was born on Friday, January 14, 1938, in Oviedo, FL. At the age of twelve, following her mothers demise, she moved to the Hastings area and she has resided in this area for over 60 years. Birdie was a graduate of Harris High School, Hastings. At an early age, Birdie became a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Federal Point, serving faithfully as a Deaconess and devoted 35 years as the churchs secretary. On September 29, 1955, Birdie Brewton was united in holy matrimony to Deacon Walter L. Oliver, Sr., and they were blessed with four beloved children: Walter, Jr., Patricia, Darryl and Marvin.

She began her career in public schools transportation in 1966 and continued serving dutifully for 37 years, retiring as the Putnam County School District Transportation Director in 2003. Birdie truly loved the Lord and she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, they comprised the love of her life. She also savored gardening, sports and cooking. Her 37-year career with Putnam County School Districts Transportation Department meant the world to her. She cared for, catered to, and loved every one in the department and she affectionately called them, My People.

In addition to her parents and husband, Birdie was preceded in eternal rest by her son, Marvin Terrance Oliver.

Ms. Birdie leaves to cherish her life and legacy: Devoted sons and daughter, Walter Lee Walt Oliver, Jr., (Linda), East Palatka; Darryl Oliver (Monica), Palm Coast; Patricia Oliver Robinson (Clarence, Jr.), Satsuma; sisters, Elzora Brown, Jacksonville; Alfreda Young (Robert), St. Petersburg; brother, Hiram Kenneth Brewton (BlaunEva), Washington, D.C., 7 grandchildren, Traci Charron Chambliss (Dennile), Jacksonville; Bryan Jermaine Robinson, St. Croix, VI; Lea Lewis (Cedric), Tampa; Walter Lee Oliver, III (Reasa), Baltimore, MD; James Oliver (Tierra), Orlando; Christopher JaVahn Robinson (Tristen), Virginia Beach, VA; Ashley Nikol Oliver, Palatka; 4 great-grandchildren; JaVon Oliver, Orlando; Taylor Chambliss, Jacksonville; Jayla Oliver, Orlando; Maliya Robinson, Virginia Beach, VA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Yvonne Freeman, Palatka; Gwendolyn Butts (Rev. Johnnie), San Mateo; Rev. Emanuel Oliver (Pauline), St. Augustine; Leona Oliver (Phillip), Putnam Hall; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Visitation of family and friends will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, October 14 at the Chapel of Serenity. Homegoing Celebration will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15, at The Lord's Temple, City of Refuge Ministries, 140 Gilmore Street, Hastings, FL., Elder Thomas Cave III, Pastor. The Reverend Johnnie Butts, Pastor of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Federal Point is the eulogist. The cortege will assemble at 9:30 a.m. at the Olivers residence, 732 County Line Road, East Palatka.

Interment will be in Federal Point Cemetery.
