Obituary

Elder Betty Lou Perkins Mays, 63, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Putnam Community Medical Center. A native of Sanderson, FL., she was born on Sunday, May 1, 1950 to Jack and Everlena (Newton) Perkins. She was educated in the Baker County FL., School District (Keller High School). Betty continued her educational pursuit at St. Johns River Community (State) College, Palatka. On June 21, 1975, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Sammie L. Mays. She accepted Christ into her life in 1979, and became a member of Grace & Truth Deliverance Ministries, under the leadership of Apostle Cora B. Fells. On June 21, 1992, she was ordained and licensed as an Elder and she served faithfully and willingly until her health declined. Elder Mays served in several ministry capacities, including: devotional leader, prayer warrior, transportation aide, Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, and church secretary. Elder Mays also served as a member on the Elders Board, Trustee Board, and within the Women of Judah Ministry. Whatever God anointed her hands to do, she did it in excellence. In 1985, Elder Mays was honored with the Grace & Truth Mother of the Year Award. She was employed with Blair's Nursery (nursery worker); Walter Williams Farm (farming contractor); American Radionics (line assembler); and finally pursued her heart's desire to become a certified childcare provider. She was very passionate about reading her bible, attending church, sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in eternal rest by her sister, Lillian Ruise. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: husband, Sammie L. Mays, Palatka; loving children, Jeffery (Julia) Perkins, Lake City, Lorrine (Alix) Session, Sr., Carol Hollings, Samuel (Mattie) Mays, Michael (Jasmine) Mays, all of Palatka; brothers, Lester Perkins, Robert Perkins, both of Sanderson; Charles (Harriet) Perkins, Brooklyn, NY; sister, Mary Ruise, Sanderson; 22 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; godchildren, Cora S. Fells, Katrina Sermon, and Hakeem Boles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, spiritual children, friends and especially her Grace & Truth Family. Visitation of family and friends will be from 5-8 p.m. at Grace and Truth Deliverance Ministries, 700 North 11th Street, Palatka. Homegoing Celebration will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, Reverend Karl N. Flagg, Pastor. Her pastor, Apostle Cora B. Fells, is the eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery. Friends may sign the Mays family guest book at www.flaggserenitychapel.com. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Karl N.
