Berthene Scott Small , 84, of Capitol Heights, MD, entered the sunset of life on Monday, July 15, 2019 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, La Plata, MD. Our beloved mother, Berthene S. Small, was born on June 30, 1935 in Thomasville GA to Mary Ella James and Ernest Scott. She attended elementary school in Thomasville and graduated from Douglas High in 1953. After high school, she was off to Jacksonville FL where she attended Edward Waters College where she studied early childhood education in hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher. While studying at Edward Waters she met and soon after married Charles S. Small. Together they had three children, Charles, Charlene and Rick. In 1972, the family moved to Washington DC seeking better employment opportunities. In 1974, our mother took a job with the federal government in the department of Health, Education & Welfare (HEW) to help provide for her family. After the death of our father in 1998, she retired from the federal government after 26 years of service.

In her youth, our mother's church home was Springhill AME Baptist Church in Thomasville GA, but adopted Allen Chapel AME Church while residing in Washington DC.

She leaves to cherish her memories: sons and daughter, Charles, Charlene and Rick; daughters-in-law Deborah Bey and Sarita Mubarak; seven grandchildren Yushua Bey, Naomi Small, Asa Mubarak, Ali Mubarak, Ahmad Mubarak, Amira Mubarak and Amir Mubarak; three sisters, Barbara Story, Beatrice Polite and Joanne Scott; three brothers, John C. Scott, Ernest Scott Jr., and Frank Scott; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
