Obituary

Bertha Mae Swain, 95, of Palatka, departed this earth destined for glory on Monday, September 7, 2015 at Community Hospice Bailey Family Center for Caring, St. Augustine. A native of Ozark, Alabama, she was born on Wednesday, October 29, 1919 to Lewis & Bertha (Brown) Ardis. In her early years, she relocated from Ozark to Deland, Florida. She was a devoted and loyal member for 52 years at St. Annie Primitive Baptist Church, Deland, under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Eugene Johnson. In 2006, she relocated to Palatka. Her favorite hymn was "Precious Lord, Take My Hand." Bertha enjoyed cooking, sewing, solving word search puzzles, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in eternal rest by her son, Lewis Swain; brother, Isiah Ardis; sisters, Eva Mae Thornton and Lillie B. Jones. She leaves to cherish her memories: devoted daughters, Norma Jean Neeley, Palatka, Barbara Hicks, Jacksonville; son, Hercules Woodridge, Deland; grandchildren, Rhonda (Jeff) Simpson, Atlanta, Dedria (Deon) Johnson, Jacksonville, Tara (Leonard) Horn, Norcross, GA, Aaron Neeley, Palatka; 11 great-grandchildren;; and a host of other relatives and friends, including a dear, close friend, Patricia "Pat" White, Palatka. Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m., Friday, September11, at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity". Homegoing Celebration will be 2 p.m., Saturday, September 12 at Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 1000 North 19th Street, Palatka, Reverend Anthony Q. Robinson, Sr., Pastor. Minister Deon Johnson, Associate Minister, Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church, Jacksonville, is the Eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill East Cemetery.
