Obituary

Bertha Mae Calloway Hughes, the beloved eldest daughter of Henry and Rebecca Calloway, was born on Friday, July 21,1944, in Hastings (Garrisville community), FL. She embarked on a remarkable journey filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to education.

Bertha's pursuit of knowledge led her to Bethune Cookman University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Her passion for teaching blossomed early, and upon completing high school, she dedicated herself to shaping young minds.

With a heart full of dedication, Bertha served as a teacher in the esteemed St. Johns County Public School District. Her teaching journey began at Walter E. Harris Elementary School, which later became Hastings Elementary in Hastings, FL. She continued her noble work at Evelyn Hamlin Elementary in St. Augustine, FL, where she eventually retired after more than thirty-five years of dedicated service.

Bertha's impact extended far beyond the classroom. She was a pillar of strength and wisdom for her family, and her memory will be cherished by her beloved daughters, Robin Janee Johnson, Lynell (Tasha) Brewington; granddaughter, Blake Kennedy Bell; and grandsons, Jeremiah and Tristan Brewington. She was also a loving sister to Thelma (Herman) Calloway-Blatch, Priscilla (Alfred) Jones, Gertie (Lorenzo) Lutricia Laws, and brother Henry Calloway. Bertha's legacy of love and guidance will be carried on by her nieces, nephews, god-children, and friends.

In addition to her husband, Buster Hughes, Jr. and parents, Bertha was preceded in eternal rest by her sister, Annie Ruth Calloway-Williams; sister-in-law, Virginia Calloway, and nephew, Leo S. Granger, Jr.

Bertha found solace and strength in her favorite scripture, Jeremiah 33:3, which encapsulated her unwavering faith and resilience. Her favorite sayings, "Keep looking up" and "just give them a nugget of the word," reflected her steadfast commitment to spreading positivity and sharing the good news of Christ.

She was a longtime, former member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church, Hastings. Since January 27, 2002, she has been active in ministry at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, Palatka, under the leadership of Rev. Karl N. Flagg. She served the Lord faithfully in the deaconess and mother's ministries. Her nurturing spirit and profound impact on countless lives were evident to all. Mother Bertha's greatest passion was serving the church, serving the community, and mentoring children and young adults. She also enjoyed traveling, shopping (including yard sales), and spending time with her family and friends.

Bertha Mae Hughes entered eternal life on Sunday, February 25, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering faith. She will be remembered for her tell-it-like-it-is approach, boundless love, and infectious laughter.

May she rest in peace and rise in glory, knowing that her influence will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Well done, faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord.
