November 3, 1946 – January 13, 2022
Barbara Jean Britton, 75, native and lifelong resident of St. Augustine, entered the sunset of life on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Flagler Hospital, St. Augustine. The daughter of Marie Carn and Robert V. Britton, she was born on Sunday, November 3, 1946. Barbara was educated in the St. Johns County School District and was a 1963 graduate of Richard J. Murray High School. She also attended Florida Memorial College.
Sis. Barbara's religious affiliation has always been African Methodist Episcopal, Barbara accepted Christ at an early age in her life and joined St. Paul AME Church in St. Augustine, Florida. She was extremely active working with the YPD's, sang in the Choir and was a Stewardess. Later years as her health declined, Sis. Barbara took on a new role as Mentor and sharing God's word with others.
Over the years, Barbara was employed as a daycare instructor and public school cafeteria employee. Some of her hobbies were reading (especially the Bible); watching old movies; and doing puzzle books. She also loved to tell jokes and declared "it keeps the mind sharp." She especially enjoyed spending time with her "Best Bud" Byron Cohen, Jr., her grandson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in eternal rest by her sister, Yvonne Bates; grandmother, Annie Mae Carn; granddaughter, Candace LaShae Scott.
She leaves to cherish her everlasting love and smiles in their hearts: children, Gina (Robert, Jr.) Tobler, Drina (Byron, Sr.) Cohen, Curtis Lee Richardson, Merita Smith and McKinley Richardson; sisters, Marie Miller and Lora Johnson; grandchildren, Marlon Tobler, Marcus Tobler, Byron Cohen, Jr., Ebony Cohen-Martin, Kia Cohen-Martinez, LaShantz Stevens; 6 great grandchildren; godchildren, Myron Evans, Latasha James, Jadah Freeman, Lakecha Douglas, Ashley Harrison, and Tamera Johnson; numerous faithful, loving and caring nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation of family and friends will be 5-6 p.m., Friday, January 21; Homegoing Celebration will be 2 p.m., Saturday, January 22 at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 85 M L King Avenue, St. Augustine, Reverend Alesia Ford-Burse, Pastor. Reverend Ron Rawls, eulogist. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, St. Augustine.
