Chief Arthur Lee Jones, 61, of Palm Coast, entered the sunset of life on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Florida Hospital Flagler, Palm Coast. A native of Fort Lauderdale, he was born on Sunday, March 2, 1952 to the parentage of Jimmie & Louise (Perry) Jones. He was a 1970 of Dillard High School and later attended Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C. After leaving school, he was hired by the City of Fort Lauderdale where he maintained continued employment for 32 years, of which twenty-two of those years being served as a member of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. He was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Frankie Mae Flakes. Arthur and his wife, Frankie, moved to Palm Coast in 2006. He joined the Bunnell Police Department in February, 2008, and shortly thereafter, was recommended by his predecessor Chief Armando Martinez to become Bunnell's new Chief of Police. On November 6, 2008, Former Chief Jones became the first African American Chief of Police for the City of Bunnell Police Department. He devoted his life experience towards helping others. He was instrumental in organizing groups and programs targeting the "at risk" youth in Fort Lauderdale and the City of Bunnell, such as the "Report Card" program and was a founder of the Alliance of Involved Ministers (A.I.M.). The primary focus of A.I.M. is to address the needs of "at risk" youths in Bunnell and the Palm Coast area. Arthur was preceded in eternal rest by his parents. Those who treasure his loving memories: devoted wife, Frankie Mae Jones, Palm Coast; 7 children, Arthur Lee Jones, Jr., Artressa (Sam) Wilson, Archarna (Tony) Reid, Arkeshia Jones, Artoine Jones, all of Fort Lauderdale, Artrellus Jones, Miami; Artashea (Steven) Batts, Palm Coast; 2 step-sons, Samuel Wright; Lester Faison, Jr.; 2 brothers, Ulysses (Evelyn) McClover; George (LeEster) Jones, both of Fort Lauderdale; 2 sisters, Eula Mae Walker, Fort Lauderdale; Delfina (Gerrald) McGriff, Jacksonville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sumpter Lee (Betty) Flakes, Palm Coast; Robert (Juanita) Flakes, Tallahassee; William (Cecelia) Flakes, Delphia Kaigler, Pearl Maxine Span, all of Fort Lauderdale; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and sorrowing friends. The Memorial Celebration will be 11 a.m. Friday, October 18th, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 75 Pine Lakes Parkway, Palm Coast, Rev. Edwin Coffie, Pastor, officiating, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. Friends may also pay respects from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Roy Mizell & Kurtz Funeral Home, Inc., 1305 NW 6th Street, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Homegoing Celebration will be 12 noon, Saturday, October 19 at the Word of the Living God Ministry, 149 NW 26th Ave., Pompano Beach, FL, Apostle John L. Mohorn, Jr., pastor.
