Annie Maude Sommons, the daughter of Morgan & Meta (Kirby) Mitchell, was a native of Keystone Heights (Speedville Community), born on Sunday, February 29, 1920. She was educated in the Alachua County School District. She was converted at an early age and was baptized at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Speedville. As a teenager, she relocated to Gordon Chapel and resided there until moving to Johnson in 1973. She was united in holy matrimony to Deacon Otto Sommons and also joined Gilgal Baptist Church in Johnson. To their marital union, ten children were born. Mother fought a good fight, finished her course and kept the faith, serving the Lord faithfully for over 75 years within the same (Gilgal/Trinity) church ministry as a church mother and on the Deaconess ministry. Mother Sommons was a talented homemaker for most of her legacy and subsequently became a Putnam County School Bus Driver, retiring following 15 years of meritorious service. Her hobbies included sewing and bible reading. In addition to her parents and husband; she is preceded in eternal rest by her daughters, Eartha, Celia, and Aretha Sommons; brothers, Manza, Louie, Clabe & Wardell Mitchell; sisters, Beatrice Speed, Lois Mitchell, & Emma Lee Barton. Mother Sommons answered Her Lord and Savior's eternal call to rest form her labours and she entered the sunset of life at 6:55 p.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012 at Haven Hospice E. T. York Hospice Care Center, Gainesville, Florida . Those who treasure her life and legacy of love: sons and daughters: Estella S. Atkins, Hawthorne; Queen Esther Abner (Louie, Sr.) and Minister Julious Carnell Sommons (Eula), both of Riviera Beach; Reverend Nathan Mayo Sommons (Everlena), Johnson; Cherriestine Flowers (Curtis), Litchfield Park, AZ; Ronnie Sommons (Collette), Rivera Beach; Gloria Shirley Ann Mays (Bernard), Harker Heights, TX; Sister, Zelma Watson, Earleton, FL; 21 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and caring friends. Visitation of family and friends will be 3-8 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2012 and 12- 2pm Saturday, October 6th. Homegoing Celebration will be 2pm. Saturday at Trinity United Missionary Baptist Church, 146 S County Road 21, Hawthorne (Johnson). Dr. Clarence Woods, pastor, is the Eulogist. Interment will be in Gilgal Cemetery.
