Obituary

The life and legacy of Andrew "A.D." Johnson, Sr.: An additional member of the "Johnson clan" arrived on Friday, August 26, 1927 in Plant City, Hillsborough County, Florida. The children of William and Classie (Cox) Johnson were informed that they had another baby brother. His name would be "Andrew," which means "manly, masculine, man." The family migrated within Florida from Plant City to Bronson to Old Julia (on CR 210) and subsequently to Elwood. Andrew grew to be a well-respected, hard-working man and left an impression upon all that encountered him. At the age of 17, on May 19, 1945, he united in marriage to Louise Jones and they became the proud parents of nine children. Andrew began his Christian journey in Elwood at St. Joseph Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend F. D. Raggins, Sr. He later became an active member of the New Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, under the spiritual guidance and God-fearing leadership of Reverend Allan C. Pennill, Sr. for over 15 years until pastor's retirement. Andrew attended bible study, prayer meeting, Sunday worship, 5th Sunday Baptist Association services, and sang in the choir. He often led the song, "I'm Going to Stay Under the Blood."

"A.D." was the best provider. He worked for McGuire Timber Company for more than 50 years and afterward put in countless hours working for Dillon M. Stratton, Inc. for many more years. On Saturdays, Andrew worked for Mack Richardson and Jimmy Wells as a diesel mechanic. In addition to working long hours, Andrew found the time to complete the interior structures of his new home. He was a man of many talents. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, raising pigs and carpentry. Andrew ensured that his wife and children had a good life. "Daddy," as he was affectionately called, because he was a nurturing grandfather to his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "Daddy" exemplified the true essence of a man, as his name precisely denotes. He was a Husband, Father, Leader, Supporter, Christian, Giver, Role Model, Friend, Disciplinarian, Brother and most importantly, a man that placed his family first! To all of the girls and boys, he blessed each with a perfect picture of a man with strong work ethics. Many early mornings and late nights he worked, making ultimate daily sacrifices for his family. He also left a legacy of wholesome, decent morals and family values that you don't see every day. He taught his family through personal example when you do something, you put forth 100%. He was a good ole fashion country boy. Both "Daddy" and "Momma" presented us the gift of "Family."

In addition to his parents and siblings, Andrew was preceded in eternal rest by his beloved wife of 71 years, Louise Jones Johnson; son, Claude W. "C.W." Johnson; sister, Cola Mae Harris; son-in-law, Thomas Shaw, Sr.; great-grandson, Anthony Lewis.

Well done thy good and faithful servant, Andrew "A.D." Johnson, Sr. who was quietly reclaimed by God and became our guardian angel at 8:50 p.m., on Sunday, August 13, 2017, at his Elwood residence, at the age of 89, two weeks before his 90th birthday. Lord, we thank you for giving us so many years and precious moments with our champion.

Those who cherish his life and legacy most: loving sons and daughters, Andrew (Eartha) Johnson Jr., Lorraine (Randall) Shaw, Mary Ford, Debra Shaw, Annie Shaw, Ronald Johnson Sr., Lynette Clayton, David (Deanna) Johnson Sr.; 39 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
