Obituary

Amos A. Humphrey, 93, of Crescent City, entered the sunset of life on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at Putnam Community Medical Center. Amos was a native of New River, Bradford County, Florida, born Thursday, September 20, 1917. He was educated in the St. Johns County School System at the Hasting Vocational Training High School. Amos was inducted into the United States Army during World War II (December 10, 1942). He earned the Good Conduct Medal and the European-African- Middle Eastern Medal. On November 7, 1945, he was honorably discharged. After serving his country, he relocated to Newark, New Jersey. For 30 years, Amos was a professional chauffeur for the federal government and was the official driver of numerous prominent federal officials including Former President Richard M. Nixon and Henry Kissinger. Driving was his lifelong passion and he drove until his last day on earth. Amos enjoyed visiting family members, eating fried fish, watching football and game shows. He was a graduate of Camp School of Tailoring where he earned a diploma in custom tailoring. Amos was baptized at Newark Church of Christ under the leadership of Brother Eugene Lawton, Minister. In 1993, he relocated to Crescent City, Florida and he was a member of the College Road Church of Christ, Brother C.L. Overturf, Jr., Minister.

He was preceded in eternal rest by his parents, Ulysess & Lillie (Yearty) Humphrey, Sr.; Daughter, Ernestine M. Humphrey; Sisters, Juanita Smith; Mattie Johnson; Brother, Ulysess J. Humphrey, Jr.

James) Sloan, Crescent City; Sylvia (Harold) Felder, Flagler Estates; Shirley (James) Sanders, Riviera Beach; Cynthia Fitz, Gainesville; and Doris Humphrey, Hastings; Nephews, Leon Hatten, Newark, NJ; Charles (Mamie) Smith, White Springs; George (Cassaundra) Taylor, St. Petersburg; Ernest Buck (Toni) Smith, Jacksonville; Ulysess Lucky (Phyllis) Humphrey, Durham, NC; Amos Jerome (Patricia) Humphrey, Hawthorne; Warren Smith, Federal Point; Seaborn (Allyson) Smith, Lake Worth; and Clifton Bernard (Carolyn) Smith, West Palm Beach; god-children, Bertha Allen, Shana Miller, and Desiree Miller, all of Warrenton, NC; and a host of other relatives & caring friends.

Visitation of family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, December 23, 2010 at the Chapel of Serenity. A Celebration commemorating his life will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 24th at College Road Church of Christ, 400 College Road, Palatka, Bro. C. L. Overturf, Jr., assisted by Brother Lonnie Stewart, Westside Church of Christ, Jacksonville, is the eulogist. The cortege will assemble 10:20 a.m. Friday at the Chapel of Serenity, 2400 Madison Street, Palatka.

Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery.
