Obituary

Amos Jerome Humphrey, 63, of Hawthorne, entered the sunset of life on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Haven Hospice Roberts' Care Center, Palatka, following an extended illness. The son of Ulysses & Gertrude (Robinson) Humphrey, Sr., he was a native of Hastings, FL., born on Saturday, May 6, 1950. His early childhood years were served at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Hastings. He was a 1967 graduate of Walter E. Harris High School, Hastings. In 1969, he moved to North Central New Jersey area (Newark/East Orange) and was employed as a mental health counselor at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital. In 1976, he returned to Hastings, subsequently relocating to Gainesville employed by the Northeast Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center and later Taachale, where he retired. In 1990, he was united in marriage to the former Patricia Ann Scott. He was also an ESE instructor at the Hawthorne Jr. Sr. High School. In 2001, he earned a B.A. degree in Sociology and Education certification at Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach. Amos was a retired educator and Mental Health Counselor. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Hawthorne. He loved fishing and enjoyed being a participant in the Hawthorne Breakfast Club. In addition to his beloved parents, Amos was preceded in eternal rest by his sister, Dr. Cynthia Humphrey-Fitz. Those who cherish his memories: devoted wife of 24 years, Patricia Scott-Humphrey, Hawthorne; four sons, Terrell (Tracey) Humphrey, St. Augustine; Treven (Amber Lynn) Hurley, Ft. Bragg, NC; Patrick (Ashley) Powell Sr., Springhill, FL; Amos (Martha) Humphrey II, Tampa; six daughters, Lashanda (Dwayne) Preston and Tisha (Anthony) Humphrey, both of St. Augustine; Keisha Humphrey and Keyonna Humphrey, both of Elizabeth City, NC; Trenida Hurley, Atlanta, GA; Stacey Parker, Philadelphia, PA; two step-daughters, Adrienne "Tia" Gainey, Gainesville; Melba (Joey) McGee, Hastings; three sisters, Betty N. Scott and Doris P. Humphrey, both of Palatka, Judy E. ("Kenny") Ellington, Hastings; brother, Ulysses "Lucky" (Phyllis) Humphrey, Durham, NC., sisters-in-law, Christine ( Jimmie)Williams, Amanda (Ronald) Mills, Yama (Trevor) Gooding; brothers-in-law, Tracy (Aleida) Scott, Lewis (Carolyn) Scott, and Cubby Scott; aunts, Annie Ruth Robinson, Orange Park; Marie Adams, Palatka; Myrtle Humphrey, Newark NJ; Barbara Jean Tucker, Brooklyn, NY., Ora Alexander, Hawthorne and Rosa Bradley, Gainesville godson, Jermaine Hutchinson Jr.; devoted Friends, Mary Reed, Simon Harris, Alvoid Douglas, and Jeff Sims; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other sorrowing friends. Visitation of family and friends: 3-5 p.m. Friday, March 28, at New Hope United Methodist Church, 22500 SE 71st Avenue, Hawthorne; 6-8 p.m. Friday at "Flagg's Chapel of Serenity." Homegoing Celebration will be 11 a.m., Saturday, March 29, at New Hope United Methodist Church, Reverend Eugene E. Herring, Sr., pastor, is the eulogist. Interment will be in Hawthorne Cemetery, Hawthorne.
