Deacon Alonzo "Al" Scott, 79, of Palatka entered the sunset of life on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Flagler Hospital, St. Augustine. Deacon Alonzo Scott was a native of Columbia, (Houston County), Alabama, born on Sunday, December 3, 1933 to Willie James & Essie B. (Powell) Scott. At an early age, the family relocated to Georgia and he was educated in the Ashburn (Turner County), Georgia School System (graduate of Ashburn High School.) Upon graduating, "Al" briefly moved to Longwood, Florida before moving to Rochester, New York. He worked in construction and was a handyman before commencing an over the road truck driving career with Pennsylvania Truck Lines, mostly catering to the East Coast and the Midwest region. Following retirement, in 1995, Al moved to Palatka. He united in marriage to the former Betty Jean Humphrey Nelson. He was a former member of Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Timothy F. Robinson, Jr. In 1996, Brother Scott united with Mount Tabor First Baptist Church. In 2001, he was ordained as a Deacon and he willingly served in any capacity he could. Over the years, Deacon Scott faithfully served the Lord through the Deacon's ministry, Transportation ministry, Men's ministry, and the Landscape ministry. Deacon Scott often testified about his salvation experience and enjoyed speaking about the goodness of God in his life. His hobbies included gardening and bowling and his pleasure was spending time with family and friends. In addition to his parents, Deacon Scott was preceded in eternal rest by his first wife, Katie M. Scott; brothers, James C. Scott and Nathaniel Scott, Jr., and sister, Pearl Scott Mallory. Visitation of family and friends will be 5- 8 pm Friday, October 4th at Flagg's Chapel of Serenity, 2400 Madison Street, Palatka. Homegoing Celebration will be 3 p.m., Saturday, October 5th at Mt. Tabor First Baptist Church, 4909 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, Reverend Karl N. Flagg is the Eulogist. Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery, Palatka.
