Obituary

Almetia Lawton Mims, 71, of Crescent City entered the sunset of life on Sunday, October 12th at St. Vincents Medical Center, Jacksonville, following an extended illness. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Lawton & Annie Beasley, born Monday, June 7th, 1937 in Crescent City. At an early age, Almetia became a member of the Old Elizabeth Baptist Church in Crescent City (Long Station) under the pastoral leadership of the Rev. J.D. Hughes. She later joined the Friendship Baptist Church and New Elizabeth Baptist Church, Rev. E. L. Yorker, pastor where she served for many years. In 1999, she moved to Lynchburg, Virginia and resided there for several years. She was a former employee of the Billy Newbold & Scotts Nursery. In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing and cooking. Almetia is preceded in eternal rest by her parents; son, Michael Powers; siblings, Willie Lawton, Prince Lawton, and Hattie Lawton. To cherish her memories; Husband: Willie C. Mims Jr., Crescent City; Children: Jamica Mims (Kenneth Passmore) Satsuma; Roderick Mims (Leotha) Waldorf, MD., Geffrey Mims, Cheyenne, WY., Eric Baber (LaDonna) Lynchburg, VA., Wanda Ann Brinson (Luther) and Gwendolyn Barrs (Rev. Darryl), both of Palm Coast; Charles Williams (Dianne) Pooler, GA; Wallace Brinson, Long Island, NY; Sister: Gussie Mae Monts (Bobbie Joe), Seville; 17 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 3 godchildren, devoted cousin, Edna Mason, Crescent City; a host of other relatives and devoted friends. Visitation of family and friends will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9-11 a.m. with Homegoing Services Saturday 11 a.m. at the True Foundation Ministries, 608 Randolph St., Crescent City, Pastors Raymond & Gwendolyn George. Her son-in-law, the Reverend Darryl Barrs, is the eulogist.
